Customized solution for an Austrian company in the field of transport, earthworks and sand and gravel extraction

Herzer Bau- u. Transport GmbH, based in Vienna and Groß-Enzersdorf (Austria), specializes in the production and delivery of building materials such as sand, gravel and crushed stone. In order to meet the increasing demands for efficiency and flexibility, the company was looking for an automated solution for big bag filling. Together with the general contractor BAG Klöch, SB developed a customized system that considerably simplifies and accelerates the packaging process and raises it to a new level of performance.

THE REQUIREMENTS

The aim of the project was to efficiently fill gravel, sand and crushed stone in different big bags and prepare them for further transportation.

  • Reduction of manual work steps (such as manual loading and the previously individual removal of pallets) through a largely automated solution

  • Filling and handling of 45 big bags per hour

  • Filling weight from 800 to 1,200 kg

  • Integrated empty pallet magazine for 45 pallets

  • Simple handling of a wide range of big bag variants (loop lengths, volumes)

  • Filling of different products (gravel, crushed stone, sand) with different flow characteristics with one line

  • Optimization of pallet removal for double fork lift truck handling

  • Integration of the material feed system of the general contractor BAG Klöch

  • Automated logging of the quantities filled

OUR SOLUTION

The following solutions were found for the customer through various project-specific adaptations.

  • Delivery of a big bag filling station with integrated pallet separation and automatic full pallet removal

  • Two additional empty pallet storage units for storing a total of 45 pallets

  • Gross filling system for flexible material processing from 800-1,200 kg per big bag

  • Corner transfer unit for exact positioning of two filled big bags for double fork lift truck removal

  • User-friendly HMI control panel with program selection for different bag types and products

  • Integration of the drives and sensors of the feed hoppers and the ascending conveyor into a central control system, including automatic daily logging of the filling process

  • Continuous coordination with BAG Klöch for smooth integration of the solution

  • Compliance with all CE and safety requirements for safe, standard-compliant operation

Project implementation and technical features:

Herzer Bau- u. Transport GmbH, based in Vienna and Groß-Enzersdorf, Austria, is an established company in the sand, gravel and crushed stone production sector. As part of the modernization of its internal packaging and transport process, Herzer wanted to optimize the existing manual processes and automate them to a greater extent.

Previously, big bags were filled using a simple semi-automatic system: although the material was filled automatically, the empty pallets had to be inserted manually. After each filling, the filled big bag had to be lifted off individually using a forklift truck and transported away. This method of working was not only labor-intensive, but also caused delays. As the company produces various products with different flow properties, filling also posed a challenge.

Herzer formulated clear goals in order to meet the increasing demand and optimize internal processes: The new solution should enable an output of 45 big bags per hour, work largely automatically, enable the handling of different big bag types as well as materials and at the same time bring advantages in terms of the use and costs of personnel resources.

The project was requested by the general contractor BAG Klöch, who was responsible for the material feed using two feed hoppers and an ascending conveyor. Our task was to integrate the downstream process chain - from big bag filling to pallet transportation - into the existing concept.

The decision to commission STATEC BINDER as a partner for this project was based on the convincing combination of technical advice, individual solution expertise and service package. In particular, the possibility of obtaining a solution that was precisely tailored to the requirements played a central role.

The STATEC BINDER solution: automation with flexibility

We designed and supplied a comprehensive solution for Herzer, consisting of a big bag filling station including integrated automatic pallet separation and two additional automatic empty pallet storage units. These enable the storage of up to 45 empty pallets. The station processes big bags weighing between 800 and 1,200 kg and is designed as a gross filling system. The customized solution enables a filling capacity of 45 big bags per hour, with a low overall height of the system. The output also depends on the flowability of the respective product - an even higher output would be possible with particularly flowable materials. Another key element of the solution is the corner transfer at the end of the full pallet transport: the filled big bags are positioned in such a way that they can be lifted off the forklift truck and transported away at the same time using a double fork, which significantly speeds up internal material handling.

The variety of big bags used was also taken into account: Herzer uses its own big bags as well as those from customers, which have different loop lengths and volumes. STATEC BINDER was able to solve this challenge by specially programming the machine operating panel (HMI). Using the user-friendly control panel, the operator can now easily switch between different presets or programs, depending on which product he is filling or which bags are being used. This flexibility is crucial for the company's daily requirements.

The integration of the ascending conveyor and the feed hoppers from BAG Klöch into the central control system of the STATEC BINDER system is particularly noteworthy. This integration allows the customer to monitor and control the entire production process easily and from a single location. As the entire control system for the line runs via the STATEC BINDER control cabinet, all safety requirements in accordance with the CE standard as well as local and operational regulations had to be met during implementation. These were fully taken into account and technically implemented by our project team.

The HMI system not only allows the overall control and selection of specific products and big bag types, but is also connected to the customer's office software. This automatically generates a daily filling protocol that documents how many big bags of which material have been filled - a valuable tool for internal planning and customer communication.

Before delivery, a detailed factory acceptance test was carried out at STATEC BINDER in Gleisdorf, in the presence of a team from the general contractor BAG Klöch and representatives from Herzer Bau- u. Transport GmbH. The acceptance was successful and all requirements were met to the full satisfaction of the customer.

Since commissioning in 2024, the plant has been running smoothly in daily operation. Herzer benefits from a largely automated filling process, which has not only increased production capacity but also reduced personnel costs. Orders can now be processed faster and more efficiently - with more efficient staff deployment at the same time.

Herzer also relies on STATEC BINDER for service: the company uses our 1-6-11 service program, which has already been used for two scheduled service appointments.

"It's not the price that counts - it's the flexibility. When selecting our suppliers, we don't go for the cheapest provider, but for the one who thinks, acts and grows together with us. Our services are individual - because they are developed directly with our customers. Every requirement, every challenge has brought us further.

In STATEC BINDER and BAG Klöch, we have found two partners who share our philosophy. The customized and flexible solution that we have developed together allows us to respond precisely to the needs of our customers - efficiently, modern and future-oriented.

We are particularly proud of the fact that we have been able to automate several manual work steps through our collaboration. This not only makes us faster and ready for action at short notice, but also brings us up to date technologically." - Reports Martin Herzer from the Herzer Bau- u. Transport GmbH about the project.
